A diagnosis starts with measurement, not a parts guess. Our technician confirms the equipment has power and the thermostat is calling, measures the temperature difference across the indoor coil, called delta T, to see whether the system is moving heat at all, then checks airflow and reads refrigerant pressures with superheat and subcooling to judge whether the charge is correct.

That is why a do-it-yourself refrigerant top-off fails on two counts. It is work the rule reserves to certified technicians, and it treats a symptom instead of the fault. Refrigerant is not consumed by a sealed system, so if the charge is low, the refrigerant left through a leak, and the leak is still there.
